Two of the most visceral and powerful scenes of One Night are in the series’ final instalment, Episode Six. Tess (Jodie Whittaker) has made the extraordinarily brave decision to seek answers to what happened to her the night she was raped, and thanks to the investigative work of her friend Hat, she acquires the audio recording of the assault - a recording that until Hat’s discovery, no one except Joey Calley (George Mason) and the feds knew existed. In these two harrowing, devastating, and cathartic scenes, we witness Tess learn in real time the horrific reality of the worst night of her life and the rawness of her immediate reaction, which Joey absorbs both emotionally and physically.
To say Whittaker delivers a terrific performance is an understatement, and Mason, even without any lines, answers her with a performance that while quieter is equally as affecting. They linger with us still. So when the opportunity to interview those involved with the show arose, we would’ve been remiss not to ask if they’d be willing to share their experiences making this pivotal sequence.
Over the course of two months, we held individual interviews with cast and crew members of One Night, and they graciously shared their perspectives. Below, you’ll find a compilation of those perspectives, stitched together to form a loose narrative of how those two moments came to be.
Enjoy learning about the magic, but please, take care of yourself. The process was barely less intense than the scenes themselves.
