The Good Witch (Deluxe) by Maisie Peters

The Good Witch Banner

“Am I better yet?” Questions the title track of The Good Witch by British singer-songwriter Maisie Peters. With lush synths and emotive vocals, her sophomore album is not one to miss, debuting at no. 1 on the UK charts when it came out four months ago. At time of writing, The Good Witch (Deluxe) is fresh off the press, brimming with magic and mayhem.

Read The Room writer Hazel gives you their breakdown of each bonus track.

Track 16 - Holy Revival

The confessional, word vomit-style lyricism of the verses draws in the listener. This is part of what appealed to me about Maisie Peters at first listen; her ability to make a seemingly-niche emotion seem universally relatable, making her songs perfect to cry to or scream in a car or a shower. This one fits in the latter category.

Favourite lyrics: “No crying on tubes, no weird little moves/No telling the truth/And definitely no you, Andrew”

Track 17 - Yoko

This song is very reminiscent of “old Maisie”, of the mellow-sounding acoustic ballads she used to post on YouTube. First teased in 2022, the 40-second snippet became a fan favourite, and I'm so glad it was released in all of its glory. Peters cries out in her soft yet powerful voice that she never wanted to leave and that her ex-lover had the Beatles’ break up all wrong; it was not Yoko [Ono]’s doing. This one is for sure going to end up on many playlists.

Favourite lyrics: “You misunderstood the secret/The universe don’t always come through/And Paul McCartney is not the villain”

Track 18 - The Song

Although I will admit right off the bat that this one is my least favourite of the six bonus tracks, it is not without its merits. The chill, jazzy beat creates an atmosphere that deteriorates throughout the song as the singer promises that she’s “gonna fall out of love by the end of the song”. Really shows the tumultuous process of moving on and getting over a relationship.

Favourite lyrics: “Like how to see that everyone is not poetry/‘Cause I wrote you all these fucking songs/And you broke up with me”

Track 19 - Guy On A Horse

This song immediately screams Legally Blonde (2001) and Barbie (2023). Peters vocalises the thoughts we all think when talking to mediocre men who think they’re impressive, alluding to St Joan of Arc and poking a little fun. This is another one that will be extremely cathartic to scream.

Favourite lyric: “Talking over me, like, is that smart?”

Track 20 - Truth Is

Both the lyricism and production of this song are very reminiscent of Taylor Swift’s work with producer Jack Antonoff. The catchy melody and foot-tapping rhythm fused with lush vocals create pop perfection. The lyrics are heart-wrenching and relatable, making this song perfect to dance to or cry to. Your pick.

Favourite lyrics: “Hey baby, all I ever did was care/You played a bitter game of musical chairs”

Track 21 - The Last One

I think this is the epitome of The Good Witch; synth-pop ballad at its best. This style suits Peters’ voice and lyricism to a T. The lyrics describe the tender experience of loving someone and seeing the best in them, despite all their flaws. The placement of this song is also very clever - the last track, The Last One. A small but fierce closer. I really love this one.

Favourite lyrics: “You're bright and it's blinding/Just a small spark, and you're flying/With your wax wings”
